COP27: Sharm El-Sheikh first sustainable green city in Egypt

Egypt is preparing to host COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh city, vowing to make it a turning point to maintain international momentum and affirm the commitment of all governmental and non-governmental parties to turn their promises and pledges to actions on the ground.

Willing to transform Sharm El-Sheikh into the first sustainable green city in Egypt  various environmentally-friendly projects have been launched, including solar energy plants, a new central park in Sharm El-Sheikh, and a robust transportation system, all of which utilize clean energy.

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad affirmed that Egypt implemented many eco-projects to transform the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh into an environmentally friendly and green city ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP27, held from the 7th to the 18th  of November,

The transformation into a green city has been realized through cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to change the operation systems at all Sharm El-Sheikh hotels to depend on solar energy. Besides, the solid waste management system is being developed in the city, including changing collecting, transferring, and recycling methods. Egypt is also seeking to convert transportation modes in the city to run on natural gas or electricity.

The Egyptian government pressed ahead with plans to convert thousands of petrol-powered vehicles to run on natural gas as part of its effort to preserve the environment. Furthermore, Sharm El-Sheikh has provided many gas stations in the city with electric car charging units. In addition, the city equipped parking lots and hotel garages with charging units.

The objective to transform Sharm El-Sheikh into green city includes the plan to convert all buses and cars, including taxis, as well as all mass transportation in the city to run with natural gas or electricity.

With regard to solar energy projects, two plots of land have been allocated for the establishment of two new solar power stations; with the two new plants, the number of solar power plants in the city will be four, with a total capacity of 20 megawatts, in addition to other projects announced by the South Sinai governor.

During COP26 in Glasgow, Egypt launched its National Climate Change Strategy 2050 with five main objectives, including cutting emissions in various sectors to maintain sustainable economic growth, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, producing energy from waste, and using alternative energy like green hydrogen.
