The International Conference on Migration and Development aims to address issues related to irregular migration and to combat human trafficking, while also promoting economic development through collaborative efforts among nations.
The two leaders discussed a wide range of topics, including migration, trade, and energy during their discussions.
Madbouly highlighted Italy's significant role as Egypt's largest trading partner within the European Union and the fourth-largest globally.
He expressed the desire to strengthen cooperation in petrochemicals, natural gas, and renewable energy transmission from Egypt to Italy and other European countries.
Madbouly also mentioned the fruitful outcomes of Italy's Deputy PrimeMinister and Minister of Foreign Affairs' visit to Egypt in March, which included cooperation in agriculture, irrigation, and food manufacturing. These are areas that Egypt aims to further strengthen in partnership with Italy.
Italy's Prime Minister expressed her commitment to reinforcing bilateral relations across various sectors and highlighted potential joint projects with Egypt. Madbouly expressed his gratitude to Meloni for inviting Egypt to participate in the conference and acknowledged the country's role as a host to nearly nine million migrants and refugees, making migration issues highly significant.
Both sides agreed to share details of proposed projects between the two countries in the near future.
According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), the trade volume between Egypt and Italy increased significantly in 2021, rising by 29 percent to reach $5.8 billion compared to the previous year's $4.5 billion. Moreover, Italian investments in Egypt increased by 40.3 percent during Q1 of FY 2021/22, reaching $448.8 million.
Egypt and Italy are both members of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), whose primary objective is to create a regional gas market in the Eastern Mediterranean and bolster trade relations among its eight member states.
Italy's energy giant Eni played a crucial role in the discovery of Egypt's Zohr natural gas field in its Mediterranean waters, which propelled Egypt to become a significantproducer of this alternative energy source.
Sisi discusses economic cooperation with Italian officials, businessmen
Ahram Online , Tuesday 14 Mar 2023
Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed on Tuesday ways to boost economic relations with Italy with a high-level trade mission led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, the Egyptian Presidency stated.
During the meeting, El-Sisi affirmed that Egypt welcomes Italian officials and companies, stressing that Italian companies have a record of fruitful work in the country.
He also pointed out that the visit activates the strategic partnership between both countries and lays the foundation for further economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of agriculture and food in the light of the current global food crisis.
The issues of illegal migration and efforts to cooperate in the field of energy were also discussed.
According to the Egyptian Presidency, Tajani’s visit to Cairo, at the head of an expanded trade mission from major Italian companies, comes within Egypt’s long-standing friendly relations with Italy.
Following the meeting with El-Sisi, the Italian delegation met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly who discussed with them ways to boost Italian investments in Egypt and the latest economic and trade reforms implemented in the country.
Egypt president, Italian PM discuss global food crisis, irregular migration
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed the global food crisis and refugee flows, Spokesperson for the Presidency Ahmed Fahmy announced on Thursday. The phone conversation comes a week following the World Food Program's decision to grant Egypt $431 million to support the country's food security goals during its annual summit in Rome from 26 to 30 June.
Egypt and Italy signed an extension of the third phase of their $100 million debt swap programme in May, facilitating greater investments in national food reserves.
The outbreak of war in Ukraine last year put significant strain on Egyptian food security, recently compounded by consequences of the war in Sudan. An estimated 200,000 Sudanese have sought refuge in Egypt since the outbreak of the conflict, further straining the country's resources.
Irregular migration
El-Sisi and Meloni also discussed irregular migration and mechanisms for cooperation on the issue.
Egypt has stepped up its efforts to control irregular migration since 2016, when the country launched its first national strategy addressing the issue.
The strategy embraces a multi-pronged approach. It encompasses Law 82/2016, and its amendments, which sets out stiff penalties against migrant smuggling.
Seeking to address the root causes of irregular migration, however, the strategy also includes initiatives to boost household incomes and employment in governorates which are the largest sources of irregular migrants.
El-Sisi and Meloni also discussed regional and international issues of mutual national interest, and the two leaders expressed commitment to continued collaboration at all levels.
